On Thursday, April 20 2023, Anna Claudia Nierhoff presented her lecture entitled: Auf verschlungenen Wegen – Eine Spurensuche zur Rezeption der Bamberger Weltchroniken (On convoluted paths – searching for traces of the reception of the Bamberg world chronicles). Returning to the good tradition, it was a live event held in the MGH institute in Ludwigstraße 16.
Drawing on an impressive collection of photographic evidence, Nierhoff revealed how the Bamberg Chronicles, written by Frutolf of Michelsberg and his continuators at the turn of the 11th century, were repeatedly continued, paraphrased, incorporated into later annals or chronicles, and transmitted in the form of excerpts over the years. Her presentation traced the lines of the chronicles’ reception up to the 16th and 17th centuries, when they were co-opted by both Protestants and Catholics in the context of the confessional conflicts.
After the lecture, our guests enjoyed the opportunity of meeting and exchanging thoughts over a small refreshment, reminding us how important such informal get-togethers are for the life of the scholarly community.
