The MGH are proud to invite our friends and guests to the presentation of Prof. Dr Dr h.c. Martina Hartmann’s latest publication: „Es fragt die Welt nach meinem Ziel, nach deiner letzten Stunde nichts." Das Wissenschaftler-Ehepaar Hildegund und Ottokar Menzel (1910-1945).

Ludwigstr. 16 / München (Reception in the MGH institute)

In connection with the MGH’s bicentennial celebrations, Martina Hartmann began investigating the fate of young MGH scholars working for the Reichsinstitut für ältere deutsche Geschichtskunde (as the MGH was then known) under Nazi rule. This was the beginning of a project that has now come to fruition in this monograph study.

In 2021, Martina Hartmann presented the first results of her research on the life of the married scholars Ottokar Menzel and Hildegard Rogner-Menzel during the Third Reich on the basis of the then available printed sources. The online publication of her lecture prompted family members, friends, and colleagues of the Menzels to provide Hartmann with important private source material, enabling her to reconstruct a much more detailed picture of their lives and the circumstances of their death. The project took a surprising turn, raising the question of how their colleagues and friends dealt with their knowledge of the young couple‘s fate in the post-war years.
