In commemoration of the founding of the "Gesellschaft für ältere deutsche Geschichtskunde" (MGH) two hundred years ago almost to the day, the Institut für Österreichische Geschichtsforschung (IÖG) and the Austrian Akademie der Wissenschaften (ÖAW) gathered in the well filled rooms of the academy to celebrate the jubilee of this renowned research institution, with which they have cooperated in editing medieval source material for now almost 150 years. In their opening words, MGH president Martina Hartmann, IÖG director Thomas Winkelbauer, Walter Pohl, director of the Institut für Mittelalterforschung at the ÖAW, and Andreas Zajic, head of the section source editing and research, all focused on the achievments and work being done in Vienna on editing the Diplomata, the charters of medieval German kings and emperors. Andreas Zajic spoke on behalf of Walter Koch who was unfortunately prevented from attending due to sickness.

The keynote speech held by Herwig Wolfram reviewed the speaker's experiences as a member of the central board of directors of the MGH, spiced with stimulating and occasionally humorous anecdotes. In the following discussion, numerous speakers voiced their praise of the work of the Viennese Diplomata editors, underlined the future perspectives of the enterprise and convincingly made the case for the continuation of the fine level of MGH charter editions.
