Since spring 2025, the MGH is proud to host this database compiled in over 30 years work by a number of scholars under the direction of Prof. Dr Irmgard Fees (LMU Munich). The database contains facsimiles and other types of images of most existing European royal and imperial charters of the Early and High Middle Ages, with a particular focus on the charters of the rulers of the Frankish Empire and its successors. Images that can be printed or are available online are indicated and, if possible, linked, just as are existing editions and regesta. This enables users, for example, to simultaneously consult the edition of a charter and compare it with one or more images of the original document and a regest of its content.
The collection is largely comprised of images of authentic charters, but also contains original copies of medieval forgeries, fake charters, diplomata of dubious origins, interpolations and other such documents. Each entry includes specifications as to the standard edition, the date of issue of the charter, the institution where it is preserved, and all available facsimiles and images.
The charters in the database are addressable with canonical references contained in the detail view and their data can be exported in an XML format that complies with Charters Encoding Initiative (CEI) standards using the link „als CEI-XML exportieren“.
